Newburyport Chamber Music Festival 2022 Features Rhina Espaillat’s Poetry

Newburyport Chamber Music Festival 2022: August 3-14

The Newburyport Chamber Music Festival returns for its 21st season with a wide offering of events held over ten days and led by Artistic Director and violist David Yang.

The highlight of the 2022 Newburyport Chamber Music Festival is the world premiere of an original piece by renowned composer Jon Deak celebrating the 90th birthday of beloved poet and Newburyport legend Rhina P. Espaillat. Rhina’s poem “The Jury” serves as a libretto to the commissioned piece for string quartet and soprano.

Audiences will welcome back violinist, Becky Anderson, and cellist, Clancy Newman who brought both warmth and passion to their performances last summer. They will be joined by violinist Maia Cabeza and Boston-based soprano Elaine Daiber, heralded for her “spectacular vocalism.”

The Festival kicks off with a lecture by Yang (“Music on the Brink: Schoenberg’s String Quartet No. 2 and the Disintegration of Romanticism”) on August 3rd at the Newburyport Public Library. Other events include a panel discussion and demonstration with the festival artists, two Hausmusik chamber music reading parties, and open rehearsals providing a window into the creative process. The festival reaches a climax in a Nachtmusik concert (held in the dark in Brown Chapel), a benefit concert in a private home, two concerts at St. Paul’s Church and historic St. Anna’s Chapel on High Street, and the free Family Concert on Inn Street.
