“If one only wrote ‘good’ poems, what a dreary world it would be.”

How easy it is to poke fun at that remark. But poking fun doesn’t make it less true. We need truly awful poems, and great poems. Too often a “good” poem is a poem that takes no risk at all. It’s a neat little facade for the poet to hide behind, not a place to live in.
